Our Place Receives $5K Grant from New Hampshire Charitable Foundation

In conjunction with NH Gives, Our Place received a $5000 grant from the Matthew Sherman Memorial Fund which is an advised fund from New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. We are thrilled with this generous donation because it will allow us to strengthen the foundation of our organization. The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation is New Hampshire’s statewide community foundation, founded in 1962 by and for the people of New Hampshire. The Foundation manages a growing collection of nearly 2,000 funds created by generous individuals, families and businesses, and awards nearly $40 million in grants and more than $6 million in scholarships every year. The Foundation works with generous and visionary citizens to maximize the power of their giving, supports great work happening in our communities and leads and collaborates on high-impact initiatives. Our Place Raises $44,625 with NH Gives!

Doug, Sam, and Dan say, “Thank you for supporting Our Place!”

Only a few weeks after receiving their 501c3 nonprofit status from the IRS, the Our Place board of directors sprang into action to let everyone know about NH Gives. We posted on social media, emailed and called all our friends and family and got people psyched to donate to this great cause. The community came back with such a show of support that we far exceeded our initial goals. It was a very exciting 24 hours.

The first $250,000 of the fund drive was matched by the New Hampshire Charitable Trust. We managed to claim $4000 of that money. It was gone in the first few minutes! Our donors kept on giving throughout the 24-hour fundraiser and we watched the numbers soar.

With this money we can really get Our Place off the ground. We will be able to pay for grant writing assistance and more publicity to get more corporate sponsors. We actually have a bank account now and some employers such as Liberty Mutual have added us as a charity for donations with matching funds for their employees. We can’t express enough how grateful we are to all the people who have donated to Our Place and we also thank NHGives for letting us be a part of this amazing fundraiser.

Visions Open House

On September 7th a group of parents from the seacoast went to Enfield, New Hampshire to attend an open house at Visions, a supportive housing residence for 10 adults with developmental disabilities. Visions is a beautiful old inn that has a large kitchen and dining area, a large living room and a spacious sun porch. Along with the main inn building there is another three-bedroom house across the driveway, and four apartment units a short walk from that.

The residents of Visions proudly showed off their apartments and gave tours of the main house. They told about their jobs in the community and how much they love coming home to their “family” at Visions. Sylvia Dow, the founder and CEO of Visions thanked the supporting members of the community who attended the open house and talked about the many improvements that have been made to the property.

The seacoast parents who attended the open house were very impressed with Visions and this model of supportive housing. Seeing this success story for adults with developmental disabilities helped to confirm that this model should be replicated in the seacoast area. It was after this visit that the plans for Our Place, Inc. started to take form.
